ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Abby Tamer registered the first hat trick of her collegiate career as the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan field hockey opened its home slate with a 9-0 rout against in-state foe Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 4) in front of 631 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field.

Michigan earned goals from six different players, while Tamer and fellow sophomore Alana Richardson combined for five markers, including four in the opening quarter. Graduate student Tina D'Anjolell posted three assists, while senior Nina Apoola recorded a goal and two assists.

Tamer scored twice in the opening three minutes of the game, scoring at the 1:16 mark on a shot near the left post and 2:28 from the right, and completed her hat trick at the 34:04 mark early in the third quarter, tipping a reverse shot from Apoola on the arc. Tamer leads the Wolverines with a career-high six goals already on the season; she posted four goals last year.

Richardson followed Tamer's scoring spurt in the first with one of her own later in the quarter, tipping in a corner shot on the right post at 12:21 before receiving the ball from D'Anjolell in front and spinning around to deposit it into the lower right corner just 1:04 later, at 13:25.

Richardson assisted on senior Sarah Pyrtek's goal just before halftime at 28:20. Michigan intercepted the ball at the 25, Richardson fed a pass into the circle and Pyrtek finished with a hard sweep to the board for her first of the season.

Apoola, junior Kate McLaughlin and junior Lora Clarke also added their first goals of the season in the second half. Apoola and Clarke tipped in shots on Michigan's corner attack, while McLaughlin also one-timed in a shot from in front of the CMU cage.

Michigan outshot the Chippewas, 39-1, and outcornered them, 16-0, in the contest. All three goalkeepers played and combined for the shutout but did not face a shot on goal. Central Michigan's lone shot came on a second-quarter corner, which was blocked by D'Anjolell on the scoring arc. CMU goalkeepers Katie Maxim and Maja Halasz combined for nine saves.

The Wolverines (2-1) will remain at home for a 6 p.m. slate against Miami (Ohio) on Thursday (Sept. 8) at Ocker Field. Admission is free.
