Cori Nichols Collects Hat Trick in Spider Hockey Victory - RIchmond Spiders Athletic

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team extended their winning streak to three wins after collecting a 6-1 victory over Towson Sunday at Crenshaw Field.

Richmond (3-1) is back in action Sunday, Sept. 11 against no. 19 Old Dominion at Crenshaw Field. The contest is set to start at noon on ESPN-Plus.

Junior Cori Nichols (Midlothian, Va.) put the Spiders on the board first, connecting with Sutton Orndorff (Charlotte, N.C.) and Kaitlyn Csensits (Emmaus, Pa.) on a penalty corner play at the 12:25 mark in the first quarter.

Towson (1-3) answered with their lone goal of the day about a minute later to tie the game.

Senior Regan McCrossan (Waxhaw, N.C.) tallied the game-winner just two minutes into the second quarter. McCrossan took a pass from Lindsey Frank (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), juke the Towson goalie and fired off the shot for the score. McCrossan has three goals on the season.

Frank got in on the scoring action just before the end of the first half. Frank picked a Towson pocket and took it herself to put the Spiders up 3-1, for her second goal of the season. Frank paces the Spiders with seven points on two goals and three assists in four games.

Nichols again converted a penalty corner play two minutes into the second half for her second goal of the game. Orndorff inserted the ball right to Tess Keppel (Baltimore, Md.) as the stick stopper, setting up Nichols for the score.

Right at the end of the third quarter, Keppel converted her first career penalty stroke to give the Spiders a 5-1 lead.

Nichols again converted a penalty corner play in the 53rd minute of the game, playing a little give-and-go with Frank, to finish off the hat trick. This is the first hat trick for the Spiders since Olivia Frazier tallied hers in a 9-0 victory over Saint Louis in the spring 2020 season.

Senior goalie Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) tallied one save and allowed Towson's goal in 45 minutes of action. Sophomore Kristen Rake (Wynnewood, Pa.) saw her first game action, collecting two saves in the fourth quarter.

Richmond dominated possession, firing off 29 shots with 16 on goal and earning 11 penalty corners in the contest. Towson was held to seven shots with four on goal, and just three corners.
