Shiv Upgrades Could Be the Difference Between Life and Death

Shivs are arguably one of the most crucial and challenging to obtain items in The Last of Us, as they are vital to performing stealth kills on Clickers and opening Shiv Doors, which provide access to highly desirable loot. However, Shivs aren't very durable, especially when they are first obtained during Chapter 2, The Quarantine Zone, as they will only last for one use.

Fortunately, Shivs are one of the few items in The Last of Us that can have their durability upgraded. To do so, you'll need to find Training Manuals, which are hidden collectibles that you'll find throughout Joel and Ellie's journey across America.

There are two Shiv-related Training Manuals to be found, each offering an additional increase in durability. The first training manual can be found in Bill's Town, and the second can be found inside the Safe that's located inside the Grand Hotel in Pittsburgh. It is highly recommended that you prioritize finding these manuals, as they completely change how you approach combat situations.

That's not all, as you'll want to take your Shiv game to the next level by upgrading Joel's ability to use the weapon better. To do so, you'll first need to find Supplements, which are special pills used to upgrade Joel's abilities. The skill we're looking for is Shiv Master, as it allows you to automatically use an available Shiv to kill a Clicker when you're attacked -- this is extremely helpful when you're caught off guard.

Due to the rarity of finding Shivs throughout the world and the scarcity of the items needed to craft them consistently, we recommend that you do not craft melee weapon upgrades.

Leave No Stone Unturned and Search Everywhere to Find Supplies and Hidden Secrets

Despite living in a post-apocalyptic world, you would be surprised at how much can be found when searching every dead-end alleyway, bathroom, and seemingly empty room that the game has to offer.

Whether it be collectibles such as Artifacts and Firefly Pendants, skill enhancing Supplements, Tools and Parts that can be used to upgrade weapons, bricks and bottles to help distract enemies, explosives, or even essential items such as energy bars, crafting materials, and ammunition -- there's a little something to be found for everyone.

If you're struggling to locate materials, training manuals, and parts, be sure to keep an eye out for searchable cabinets and drawers, bedside tables, and bathrooms, as these are often overlooked.

Lastly, remember to always loot enemy bodies, as you'll find they often contain small amounts of ammunition and crafting materials. These materials can be a real lifesaver if you're out of supplies and the area you're in doesn't have anything noteworthy for you to loot.

Never Leave Resources Behind

Crafting is one of the primary mechanics in The Last of Us, and without learning how to manage your resources properly, your progress will quickly begin to suffer. And as a result of scarce materials, your goal will be to try and conserve as much of your resources and ammunition as possible.

That said, be sure never to leave materials behind unless necessary. If you're running low on space, open the crafting menu and look for useful items to craft, such as Health Kits and Explosives, to free up your inventory. When that isn't an option, it may be helpful to remember where the supplies were found, as you may have the opportunity to trek back to that location after your next encounter.

Take Things Slow and Never Rush Into Combat Encounters Unprepared

Be sure never to rush into combat encounters, as it's always important to ensure you're prepared and have a plan in place. What might seem an easy encounter to deal with could end up costing you all of your supplies and ammunition, which will ultimately affect how you approach future encounters if you're unable to restock on supplies.

For this very reason, it's often advised that you manually save the game before every major encounter. This allows you to jump back to previous save points should an encounter cost you tons of supplies and resources that can otherwise be avoided should you approach the situation with a different strategy.

Before entering each new encounter, you'll want to decide your approach. Do you have enough ammunition and supplies to go in guns/pipes blazing? Is a stealth approach more suited to the situation, as easily trackable patrol patterns make taking down each enemy a breeze, or will you attempt to avoid combat altogether?

If you play your cards just right and create the perfect distraction that throws off enemy patrol patterns, you might be able to sneak through entire levels without engaging in a single bit of combat -- your resources and supplies will thank you.

Create Your Own Custom Difficulty Setting

Are the five different difficulty options just not cutting it? Well, why not create your own? You can create your own custom difficulty level by selecting Difficulty via the Options menu.

Here, you'll have the ability to alter five different options that range from adjusting the amount of damage the player takes from enemies, the accuracy of enemy gunfire and frequency of projectiles, the aggressiveness of allies in combat, the grace period before enemies will alert others, and the quantity of ammunition and supplies found in the world.

Don't Be Afraid to Run Away and Hide

Spotted by an enemy but not quite prepared to take them down just yet? You'll be happy to know that you can re-enter stealth by sprinting away from the encounter and breaking free of your enemy's line of sight.

Sprinting away from an enemy using a gun will make them much less accurate and more likely to miss their shots.

Once you've broken free of their line of sight, re-enter cover by crouching behind high cover and corridors. Make sure you're well hidden, though, as enemies will split up and begin searching the area where you were last seen. This can temporarily change movement patterns, so you'll want to keep that in mind if you're trying to implement a stealth strategy.

The Bow is Incredibly Helpful For Saving Ammunition

Much like crafting materials, ammunition is also a scarce commodity in The Last of Us, so you will want to make your ammo last and only use it when needed. For this reason, we highly recommend using the Bow whenever possible.

First found in Bill's Town, the Bow is an incredibly underrated weapon that can be extremely deadly when used correctly. Despite its limited range and relatively slow reload time, the Bow can deal silent, one-shot kills to unsuspecting enemies. Better yet, every arrow fired from the bow has the chance not to break, so always check the area for any arrows that can be collected -- this is a fantastic way to save on gun ammunition.

Craft the Weapon Holsters Before Everything Else

Once you have access to workbenches and have gathered enough parts, you'll want to focus on upgrading your Weapon Holsters as soon as possible. These holsters will allow you to carry both a pistol and a long-range gun, which can be easily accessed by tapping left or right when accessing your weapon wheel.

Carrying extra weapons is a massive upgrade, as it'll offer you more variety in your weapon choice, which is especially helpful when you're running low on a particular type of ammunition, and the ability to plan and strategize different approaches towards future combat encounters.

Quick Tips and Tricks to Help You in Combat

  • Before combatting an enemy, consider throwing a brick or bottle at them. This will cause the enemy to become stunned and temporarily prone to being grabbed, where you'll have the option to either strangle them or use them as a shield.
  • Melee attacks are effective against Humans, Runners, and Stalkers, however, they will not work against Bloasters or Clickers.
  • Two Molotov Cocktails or Nail Bombs can be used to weaken a Bloater enough that it can then be finished off with just one or two shots from a Hunting Rifle.
  • To deal with large groups of infected, we recommend throwing a bottle or brick to gather them all together. Then, when they're close to each other, toss a Molotov or Nail Bomb to inflict large amounts of damage to several infected at once. While both explosives will work for the scenario, Molotovs are far more effective as their flames will linger and further damage any infected who walk over the fire.
  • Unfortunately, the method above isn't overly helpful for dealing with human-based groups, as they tend to be more separated and won't necessarily walk over the flames.
  • Consider tossing Smoke Bombs to stun human enemies. This will allow you to grab them for cover or a melee kill. Humans cannot shoot through smoke, so it also provides the perfect opportunity for you to heal or craft items on the go quickly.
