England vs France live betting: In-game tips, odds updates, best bets during World Cup quarterfinal as Tchouameni goal has Bleus up at halftime - Sporting News

A heavyweight quarterfinal clash hits the field on Saturday as England and France face off in a match with a World Cup final feel to it.

The game between European powers represents the first matchup at the 2022 World Cup between top five-ranked teams in the FIFA standings. England sit at fifth in the rankings, while France are fourth. The only team ranked higher than these two sides are third-ranked Argentina, who advanced into the semifinals on penalties past the Netherlands.

Current Golden Boot leader Kylian Mbappe looks to lead France to a second straight World Cup title, aiming to become the first team to repeat as World Cup champions since 1962. Reigning Golden Boot winner Harry Kane, who topped the 2018 goalscoring charts in Russia, will hope to put those dreams to the sword among a host of attacking talents in the England squad.

The Sporting News soccer betting expert Kyle Bonn has been sharing his tips and analysis throughout the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Follow along as Kyle takes you through the England vs. France match as it happens with live betting tips and analysis along the way.

England vs France updates, betting analysis, stats, and commentary

HALFTIME: England 0-1 France

7 mins to 2H: PICKS This has been a very hard match to call, so let's make some halftime selections.

First, Kylian Mbappe to score a goal at +380 on FanDuel is just too good to pass up. I was hoping that would hit 4/1 by halftime, but alas, he's just too good to let that go, and he's France's penalty taker as well. Mbappe loves a goal to put an opponent away, with only his pair against Denmark this World Cup actually earning points; his goal against Australia and both against Poland came after France already had a lead.

Second, the France full-backs are sure to feel the pressure through the final 45 minutes as England search for an equalizer. Theo Hernandez and Jules Kounde will be on an island against the starters Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka, while Gareth Southgate will surely go to either Jack Grealish or Marcus Rashford (or both) as this game goes on. With both of them sporting over 3/1 odds, we can put a unit on both and profit if even one gets caution. Neither of them have faced wingers like England possess so far in this World Cup.

  • PICK: Kylian Mbappe anytime goalscorer (+380 on FanDuel)
  • PICK: Jules Kounde to be yellow carded (+350)
  • PICK: Theo Hernandez to be yellow carded (+330)

Halftime: It's been cagey since the energetic first 20 minutes. France profited off a half-chance out of nothing, but otherwise these two teams have played a very gritty first half. Frustratingly, the corner count is at three, which is a slight threat to our under selected earlier. We'll be rooting for goals in the second half as well.

Some things we're watching: France yellow cards, and the goalscoring possibilities of Kylian Mbappe and Bukayo Saka. Time to do some quick research, and I'll be back to give you the results.

England vs. France: First half

45+4 min: Theo Hernandez, in for his injured brother Lucas at left-back, is down hurt after what was really nothing between him and Jude Bellingham. Bukayo Saka hasn't really gone at Theo much today, but that could be a battle for the final 45 minutes.

43rd min: Well, we missed the boat on yellow cards for France, at least for over 1.5, as Griezmann picks one up for tripping Walker. Would have liked to see them reach halftime without one so the odds had enough value. The idea still remains, and we'll think about over 2.5 at some point.

40th min: Another pick we're tracking is Kylian Mbappe anytime goalscorer. He's currently at +350 and seems the most likely to score in the match of either side. He just rifled one over the crossbar, a poor finish from his standards. If that reaches 4/1 by halftime it might be too hard to resist, especially if Deschamps decides to switch Mbappe to the opposite flank to avoid Kyle Walker.

39th min: France have been a little sloppy off the ball and have committed five fouls to England's one. If this match gets to halftime without a yellow card, we will have a look at France over 1.5 yellow cards. Especially if they're protecting a lead late, yellow cards could start flying.

34th min: PICK — I'm kind of frustrated I didn't jump on this just a few minutes ago at +175, but the game has ground down a bit from the energy we saw earlier, and the second half should feature many more chances as this one slows to halftime. The second half has been far more open all World Cup, and with just one goal here in this first half, if it gets to halftime still 1-0, there's a great chance for a pair after the break as both sides get desperate.

  • PICK: Half with most goals — 2H (+145 on BetMGM)

26th min: Boy there's a real penalty shout here for England...Harry Kane was definitely wrestled down from behind, but after a very long VAR check, play is waved on. It was definitely a foul, but it's probably outside the penalty area, so VAR can't intervene.

There's REAL needle in this match, we're mulling over a yellow card over...

23rd min: PICK — This game is really ramping up. England are going to push, and might feel a bit desperate as it drags on. Look for Jude Bellingham to start letting fly, and his odds are great value to have even one shot on target. Bellingham loves a shot from distance, ripping off 38 of them for Borussia Dortmund before the World Cup break, with 16 of them on target. Let's back England to start hitting the panic button a bit early here.

  • PICK: Jude Bellingham 1+ shots on target (+210 on FanDuel)

17th min: GOAL! FRANCE! My WORD, Aurelien Tchouameni! A goal out of nothing! Can't say it had been coming, the game hadn't really featured many good chances to this point. The Real Madrid midfielder just picks out a stunning strike from straight-on, low to the left. The assist came from Antoine Griezmann, because of course it did, as we told you in pre-match.

HIGHLIGHT: USA | UK | Canada

15th min: PICK Took us a bit to find a good opening in this game, but the under on corners for this match looks great. We're jumping on under 7.5 corners for the match at plus odds, because it seems neither side is playing for set-pieces, as they both want to carve the opponent apart in open play. One corner so far through 15 minutes, we're happy to take that number.

  • PICK: Under 7.5 total corners (+144 on FanDuel)

8th min: Couple of early half chances for both teams, but nothing in it quite yet. Great defending. England concede the first corner of the match to France. We are monitoring England corners, knowing the under is likely, but the odds are miserable at the moment. Under 3.5 corners for England is -125, that's just nothing of value. We will monitor first half corners though.

3rd min: This game is quite open to start, as both teams have some real energy. Something to keep in mind as we move forward here early. Foden and Saka have been bright for England. France looking for Mbappe down the wing early & often.

Kickoff: We’re under way at Al Bayt Stadium, here we go! A match fitting of a World Cup final. The biggest thing we're watching early is the duel between Phil Foden and Luke Shaw against Jules Kounde down the left for England. The Three Lions will want a fast start, and that could be their avenue as they look to attack France's right-back who has proven shaky at times this World Cup.

We're also looking at how England do on the corner count. They aren't a team that plays for a ton of corners, with just 20 this World Cup so far through four games, and we may jump on an under if they go a bit without one early.

England vs France: Pre-match analysis, tips, stats, and storylines

5 mins to kickoff: Before this game gets under way, please spare a thought for Grant Wahl's family. The sensational journalist and great man passed away unexpectedly while covering Netherlands vs Argentina yesterday on site in Qatar. FIFA have placed a small memorial at Al Bayt Stadium for today's game at the seat he should have been occupying in the press box, and they honored him with an applause at the stadium before the start of the match.

It's a titanic loss for the football world, as Grant was one of the best. He was also a wonderful human being who stood up proudly for what he believed in. I knew him as such personally, as we crossed paths a number of times in this business, as did so many others. We miss you Grant. Here's more on Grant's legendary career from our wonderful writer and Grant's longtime friend Mike DeCourcy.

14 mins to kickoff: At 19 years 164 days, Jude Bellingham becomes the youngest player to start a World Cup quarterfinal for England. The previous youngest was Wayne Rooney in 2006 vs. Portugal. That match finished goalless, with Portugal advancing on penalties. Rooney went the distance but did not attempt an effort in the shootout, as Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, and Jamie Carragher all saw their efforts saved by Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo.

Bellingham will be a critical figure for England today. He's +600 to score a goal and +550 to assist a goal, but more importantly he is third in the World Cup with 11 tackles won, behind only Achraf Hakimi and Mateo Kovacic, both of whom have played (and won) an extra game in the quarterfinals. He'll be so important in stopping the aforementioned Antoine Griezmann.

28 mins from kickoff: So what's a "betting live blog" you ask? I'll be giving tips and analysis during the match and make official picks on where I think the best plays are as the game goes along.

Have a look at our betting live blog from yesterday during the Croatia vs. Brazil match, where we hit four of our nine picks but turned a tidy profit! Remember, sports betting is about value, not volume, so you're not looking to hit on all your picks. Instead, follow the process and look for where you see the best openings! We'll walk through it during today's 90 minutes of action.

40 mins to kickoff: England and France have a rich history of games against each other, meeting 30 times over the years. However, this is the first matchup in the knockout stage of a major tournament, either the World Cup or European Championship. The two sides have previously met at the World Cup twice before, with both group stage games ending in a 2-0 England win.

We're very here for Opta social accounts from the two nations trading pre-match statistical barbs.

55 mins to kickoff: Not much line movement for this gargantuan quarterfinal matchup, but what little there was sees a slight shift in England's favor. Still, the majority of the money is on favorites France, according to our friends at BetMGM.

1 hr, 10 mins from kickoff: Lineups are in, and they're both as expected. The big boost is Phil Foden starting for England, and a look at him to score or assist a goal at +200 is a wonderful choice. The young Man City attacker can do it all, with 1.41 xG+xA across his 174 minutes at the World Cup.

One important footnote to the lineups: Raheem Sterling is on the bench for England, having returned from his time away to tend to his family after the break-in back home.

1 hr, 25 mins from kickoff: One player we will have our eyes on in this match is Antoine Griezmann. The Atletico Madrid forward has been one of the most under-the-radar performers in this tournament, thanks to Kylian Mbappe. Rio Ferdinand said he thinks "the only real worry" on this France team is Mbappe, that's flat out untrue.

Playing in a deeper midfield role, Griezmann has been utterly brilliant. He leads the World Cup in expected assists with 2.67 xA (the next closest is Leroy Sane's 1.86 xA), and he led the World Cup field in chances created coming into the quarterfinals with 15 (Lionel Messi has since passed him at 16 with one extra game played).

Didier Deschamps said in his pre-match press conference ahead of this game that Griezmann's new role has reinvented the player. "I have told him that he could be an excellent deep-lying playmaker and have joked that he could be a defensive midfielder,” Deschamps said. Guess what? Griezmann's five tackles are second of anyone at the tournament with over 1.0 xA, behind only the 12 (!) of Croatia's Mateo Kovacic, and his four interceptions are joint-first in that group also tied with Kovacic. He's done it all for France, and will be a key figure in this match.

1 hr, 45 mins from kickoff: One of the biggest battles in this match will be England right-back Kyle Walker against France superstar Kylian Mbappe on the flank. If Walker struggles early, we will be looking to back the England man to get booked in the match.

Yet Italian manager Gus Poyet believes that Walker's skill set is "unfair" and if anyone can deal with the French star it's the England man.

2 hrs from kickoff: Sebastian Salazar of ESPN points to weakness at central defense and a propensity for goalkeeping mistakes on both sides as reasons for the over in this match.

I agree. England have been the beneficiary of horrific finishing by opposition attackers, conceding two goals on 2.03 xGOT despite conceding 3.53 xG. France, meanwhile, have indeed seen Hugo Lloris come up big on occasion, but he's also conceded four goals on 2.89 xGOT, and he has not kept a single clean sheet.

England vs France score prediction

  • Prediction: England 1-2 France

Although England have some of the best young players in world football, France are rightly the favourites to progress in this tie, thanks mostly to their experience advantage. The majority of their squad tasted success in lifting the World Cup four years, while the majority have also enjoyed success in club football.

That'll likely give them the mental edge here, on top of the fact that they have some of the best attacking players in the world at their disposal.

Kylian Mbappe is in fantastic form, netting five tournament goals so far to lead the Golden Boot race, but players like Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann shouldn't be underestimated. At this tournament, Giroud has overtaken Thierry Henry's all-time goalscoring tally for Les Bleus, while Griezmann has been in scintillating playmaking form, creating 15 chances so far, which is the most of any player in the competition.

England vs France pre-match best bet

  • Pick: Over 2.5 goals
  • Odds: +115 (BetMGM)

Two of the highest-scoring teams at the 2022 World Cup face off here and we expect their free-scoring form to bring this bet home.

Mbappe and Co. have quite rightly stolen the majority of headlines but England too have one of the most exciting frontlines in international football.

As well as Tottenham talisman Harry Kane — who took home the 2018 World Cup Golden Boot award with six goals — Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka have all found the back of the net for the Three Lions thus far. They've also been aided by goals from midfielders Bellingham and Jordan Henderson, who have helped England to net 12 times so far, the most of any side in the tournament.
