Tips and tricks on talking dermatology with your veterinary clients - DVM 360

In a recent interview with dvm360®, Ashley Bourgeois, DVM, DACVD, gives her best recommendations on how to effectively communicate and educate clients about their pets' dermatology needs.

Talking to clients about their pets’ dermatology conditions can not only be frustrating for them but also time-consuming for veterinary professionals. To help ensure these conversations are seamless and productive, Ashley Bourgeois, DVM, DACVD, offered a few pointers during an interview with dvm360® to help team members efficiently communicate, educate, and empathize with clients.

“I understand [veterinary professionals] are busy and it is hard to sit down and have an hour-long spiel about allergies with every client. [So] having great handouts, discharge instructions, [and] training your staff well to communicate with owners [can help],” Bourgeois informed dvm360®.

Bourgeois then turned her focus to the importance of empathy during client conversations and how it can help curate a smoother and more efficient discussion, thus improving the relationship between the veterinarian and owner.

For example, Bourgeois uses a personal anecdote to better relate to clients. “I have an allergic dog myself and I am a dermatologist. I [understand] that it is frustrating, it is expensive [and] there are lots of things we are doing,” Bourgeois disclosed.

“If [your clients] are frustrated say, ‘It is frustrating, it is expensive, [and] I totally get it. Let’s get a plan together that works for you [and] your pets,’” she continued.

At Home: Eight tips to help bereaved partners move on at home - The Mercury News

“Everywhere I look, I see a life we built together.” I am on the phone with Bob Glockler, a recent widower. Like many who have lost a mate, he has a foot in two worlds: He wants to preserve and honor the memories of his late wife, yet also move forward to make the most of the rest of his life. He is 83.

“I suppose eventually I will look for some companionship,” he told me. “Whether we’re just friends, or move in together, or wind up getting married, who knows?”

Such is the push-pull of loss and the struggle to find the way, any way, forward.

Now I know this topic will make some of you want to jump to the sports section, but hang with me a minute, because this is a fact: If you are coupled up and bonded till death do you part, you have a 50-50 chance that this will happen to you, and you’re going to want these pointers. I don’t care how young you think you are.

In last week’s column, I offered Mr. Glockler suggestions for how to transition his home from “ours” to “mine” tackling specific areas, such as their bedroom and her closet. This week, I consulted a professional organizer and senior move manager from Boston for tips on how bereaved partners can sensitively and practically disperse their late mate’s belongings. Nancy Patsios, 61, lost her husband to cancer 18 months ago, so she brings her first-hand perspective along when working with clients to sort through a lifetime of memories.

“It always startles me how different the process is for everyone,” she said. As we chatted, we came up with the following guidelines for those who’ve loved and lost:

Don’t try to meet anyone’s expectations for grief. It has no timetable. The pace and manner in which individuals grieve is varied and personal. “Some feel paralyzed, while others need to do tangible tasks to help them cope,” Patsios said. Don’t push the process, but try not to wallow, either.

Expect foggy thinking. “The brain fog is real,” said Patsios. Don’t make any big decisions, including whether to move, too quickly.

Start with the easy stuff. When you’re ready, begin by getting rid of items you don’t need, love or use. For Patsios, that was easy. Her husband worked in property management, and often brought home gently used furniture. “We did not share that enthusiasm,” she said. “It was easy for me to get rid of what I didn’t want in the first place.” He also had lots of tools. “I don’t need seven hammers. I kept one.” Save highly personal items, like clothes and jewelry, for last.

View your dĂ©cor through a new lens. Homes should reflect the lives of those who live there. While the desire to honor a lost loved one is normal, clinging to all their belongings is not the best way to do that. In Glockler’s case, I suggested he remove some of the more feminine touches, like the crocheted doilies and floral pillows his wife had sprinkled around the house.

Consider your visitors. How do you want guests to feel when they come over? A home that has been appropriately edited and tailored to your life now will put guests at ease by telegraphing that you are adjusting.

Capture the essence. Rather than leave your late loved one’s material presence all over the house, try to capture that person’s spirit through a few small objects. For instance, if your partner was a gardener, baker, knitter or angler, gather items that reflect those passions: a favorite trowel, a rolling pin, knitting needles or fishing flies. Then create a discreet vignette that represents the person and let the rest go. For example, Patsios’s dad was a master tailor, and her mom was a seamstress. “I kept their thimbles,” she said.

Donate with purpose. The biggest impasse professional organizers run into is clients who say they don’t know what to do with the stuff they should let go of. “Part of that is emotional, but part is practical,” Patsios said. They don’t want to just throw something useful away. So she works to make sure items go to a cause clients feel good about: a church, a program for at-risk kids, an animal rescue. “When they know the items are being donated meaningfully, it softens the blow,” she said. When he’s ready, Glockler will donate his wife’s belongings to the hospice and hospital thrift stores she supported.

Make choices now, while you’re in control of your decisions. Leaving clear instructions about what you want done with your belongings later will spare your partner the headache and let you “move forward gracefully.” Patsios said.

Growth marketing is not a magic trick, says Ellen Jantsch of Tuff - TechCrunch

If you are looking for a growth marketing playbook, stop reading now, because you won’t get one from Tuff. The agency’s founder Ellen Jantsch makes it clear: There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to growth.

The team at Tuff knows their stuff — and it’s precisely why they are not selling “magic” or any kind of “mysterious secret sauce.” Instead, they are betting on transparency and experimentation, and it seems to be working well: The agency was warmly recommended to TechCrunch multiple times via our growth marketing survey. (You can share your own recommendations here!)

For instance, Luke Oehlerking, VP of Product and Strategy at solar company Zenernet, explained that Tuff fitted the bill for its ability to “truly move the needle with measurable results” while acting as “an extension of [Zenernet’s] own team.” This doesn’t necessarily involve offline meetings: Oehlerking and Jantsch are both based in Colorado, but Tuff’s team is fully remote, with global clients. Client work aside, Tuff also launched Growth Guide, a remote growth marketing training program for founders.

We asked Jantsch about all that, and found our conversation an interesting complement to our interview with LA-based agency MuteSix: Both share a focus on results and creativity, but Tuff is focused on a wider range of sectors than DTC, while also being smaller. Let’s find out how it works.

What is Tuff? Why did you launch it, and how big is it now?

Ellen Jantsch: Tuff is a small (20-person) growth marketing agency that partners closely with startups and scaleups to help them increase revenue and sales. While we have found success working with teams in nearly every industry, from early traction startups to large enterprises, there’s certainly a type that fits us best. The most basic guidelines: If a prospect is looking to acquire new customers and scale their company through modern channels, tools and frameworks, we’re almost always in.

I started Tuff as a one-woman show because I wanted to do meaningful work with companies (and founders) I liked. While growth was always in the cards, I’ve always been most focused on creating a great place to work with people that care about helping companies with unique ideas as much as I do. After nearly five years in business, I’m proud to say that I’ve been able to check quite a few of those boxes I created for myself in the very beginning and added a handful of others along the way.

What range of services do you provide?

Our bread and butter is building efficient, holistic, growth-focused marketing strategies. We do this with our method that’s been battle-tested and has proven itself no matter the industry or company life stage. Then, we stay hungry for research and execute to a T, consistently optimizing and refining to find maximum efficiencies.

Throughout it all, we lean on all members of our team. Egoless and curious, we share hypotheses and findings with our partners and each other to find more streamlined paths to growth. But what really sets us apart is our method. Radical transparency is the name of the game. We believe that collaboration and showing our work is the only real way to build foundations for trustworthy partnerships.

Our list of tactics includes but is most certainly not limited to PPC, social ads, technical SEO, content strategy, creative, email and conversion rate optimization (CRO).

Are your team members generalists and/or specialists?

We hire for two core roles at Tuff. We have growth marketers who are big-picture strategists, as well as channel experts who are deeply experienced in a particular type of marketing. Each account we work with is paired with a growth marketer and at least three to five different channel experts depending on what we’re testing. Your growth marketer is your map maker and wayfinder — keeping goals clearly defined and the whole team focused on creating the smartest path to growth. Your channel experts are the in-the-weeds, watching-every-dollar-spent efficiency finders and optimizers.

What are the pros and cons of hiring an agency like Tuff, compared to an in-house marketer?

Finding a full-time hire is a great option for many companies. But they come with their own set of pros and cons when compared to a plug-in growth marketing team. The major benefit is the expertise and time they bring to the team. Pulling a full-time, smart marketing hustler that can squeeze the most out of a small budget and stay in lockstep with everything else you have going on can be a huge asset. The biggest downsides and risks are finding the right fit, investing the high cost and hoping that they can remain your go-to even if it becomes time to test tactics that fall outside of their wheelhouse. Ultimately, an in-house hire is right if you’re already confident in the channels that work for you and just need someone to help you refine and grow those 1-2 channels.

When you hire a growth marketing agency, though, the major, overarching benefit is that it typically comes stacked with a full team that can get a holistic view of your business, collaborate to identify the best course of action and delegate execution tasks to true channel experts. With an agency, you can often reallocate resources as you learn and move more quickly because the team has a long history of experience.

How do you charge clients, and why?

Most performance marketing agencies pocket a percentage of the amount of ad spend they’re managing or of revenue generated by their tactics. Neither of those methods is wrong by any means. But we deliberately built our pricing system differently: We charge flat-fee retainers based on the number of services we’re plugging in at once.

Why? Because growth marketing is fickle. Sometimes, even the best GM in the game can predict that a mix of PPC, SEO content and social ads is the golden ticket. But when one of them underperforms, it’s not a sign of something gone wrong, it’s a sign that it’s time to try something new. The way our process functions at Tuff allows us to seamlessly sub in new services or team members to try something new (like CRO or creative development) without a hitch until we find the mix that’s just right.

Can’t your clients simply all follow the same growth marketing playbook?

Scaling any business is hard, and growth marketing is not a [magic] trick. I’ve yet to see a playbook that you can take from one business and apply to the next and get consistent results.

We work with more than just e-commerce businesses; we flex into SaaS, fintech and B2B industries and it’s forced us to truly develop a model/process for growth and not just a playbook, meaning our channel and tactic mix is always different.

I think something that we focus on more than most is quick, fearless testing, then finding ways of operationalizing the early wins so they can become repeatable. It’s one thing to coax wins out of champion channels, and it’s another to know that your big-picture strategy is going to hold up under the pressure of scale.

Your site mentions “rapid experimentation” and “quick wins.” Can you detail how Tuff does that?

We know that even our most experienced growth marketers can develop an original growth plan that doesn’t drive results the way we want it to, despite extensive research and strategizing. That’s one of the reasons why we like growth marketing so much, there’s no gilded road to success.

So, instead of setting a strategy in stone, we’ll start every new partnership with a plan to test a range of different tactics within our chosen channels and check in every single day to gauge performance, reallocate budgets, glean insights and prioritize quick wins. After a few weeks, we’ll be able to emerge from our sea of data to outline what worked, what didn’t work quite as well as planned, and our game plan for driving longer-term success.

How do you make sure these early wins hold up under the pressure of scale?

In our earliest weeks of a partnership with any of our clients, we’re focused on not only driving quick wins, but designing our tests and articulating our hypotheses in ways that not only uncover insights for the following quarter, but for the next year and beyond.

More so, I think some of our strongest attributes as a team are our hunger to keep learning, our curiosity and our fearlessness when it comes to adapting, even if it means turning away from a tactic that’s held up for us in the past.

One of the best ways to illustrate this is the intro message a new prospect sent us last week: “Our current agency was great — until iOS 14.5 and then things went south because they only knew how to do the one thing.”

True, we saw CPCs [cost per click] shoot up and CVR [conversion rate] plummet soon after iOS 14.5 came out just like every other growth marketing team on the planet. But what allows us to scale is the same thing that allowed us to get every one of our clients back on track post-iOS 14.5: fearlessness, curiosity and adeptness.

Why did you choose to have an in-house creative team?

Ad creative is truly distinct from brand creative and, simply, we had a heck of a time finding agencies or even freelancers that could produce content optimized for ad channels on a tight budget and an efficient timeline.

Around the same time that this problem started to hinder our ability to quickly and efficiently optimize our campaigns, there were a handful of founders that reached out looking for a growth marketing team that could drive revenue growth and also validate/battle test their messaging and value props. So, we tried it out: We designed a few tests to measure the effectiveness of different value props, created visual assets that represented those in a clear, efficient way, measured the results and found that it all just clicked.

Long before ad creative was brought in-house, though, we had been working with a set of incredibly talented UX designers. Over the years, CRO became a much more tried-and-true element of our growth marketing strategies, and when the seeds of the ad creative team started to sprout, we knew that bringing creative in-house would anchor everything in place.

How has being a remote team fared out so far?

We’ve been a remote team since day one and this helps us be really thoughtful about ways we communicate internally and with our clients. Aside from setting the growth strategy for each company we work with, choosing the tools and executing tactics, we’ve learned how to be master communicators.

As a remote team, we’ve had to put a lot of time and energy into creating a culture rooted in transparency and authenticity. I like to think that this seeps into our client relationships, too. The more informed, honest and clear conversations we can have as a team and with our clients, the better work we will all do.

The 11th annual Scary and Safe Trick or Treat, put on by the Yuma Police Department and City of Yuma with help from the Yuma County Fair Inc., takes place 4 to 8 p.m. on Halloween at the Yuma County Fairgrounds, 2520 E. 32nd St.

Local, state, tribal and federal public safety agencies, along with businesses and local nonprofit organizations, will come together at the Fairgrounds to give away “tricks or treats.”

Admission fee is $1 per person, with a “fast pass” available for $5. A combo of a hotdog, chips and water or soda will be available for $3. All purchases are cash-only. All proceeds are donated to the Arizona Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. An ATM will be on site for those who need cash.

“This is a tradition we have renewed for the benefit of the children of Yuma and hope to continue it for many years to come,” said the Yuma Police Department in announcing the event’s return.

On-site entertainment for those waiting in line includes stilt walkers, dancers, a face painter, and static display vehicles. The movie “Monsters, Inc.” will play on a big screen.

Springfield trick-or-treating allowed this Halloween with guidance to prevent spread of COVID - MassLive.com

Door-to-door trick-or-treating will be allowed in Springfield this year with strongly recommended health and safety guidance, Mayor Domenic Sarno, Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton Harris announced Wednesday.

The city made the decision after reviewing COVID-19 cases and vaccination rates and announced the plan as early as possible so families and organizers can prepare for safe and fun Halloween activities. Last year, Springfield banned outdoor trick-or-treating to prevent the spread of COVID.

The Department of Health and Human Services put out the following list of recommendations and guidance:

  • Strongly encourages everyone to keep wearing their masks and face coverings
  • A costume mask is not a substitute
  • Avoid confined spaces, large gatherings and maintain social distancing
  • Wash or sanitize your hands often
  • Parents, please supervise your children using hand sanitizer
  • Wash your hands when you get home with soap and water before you eat any treats
  • Clean frequently touched items regularly
  • For houses participating and handing out candy, do not allow trick or treaters to grab treats from the bowl or bag. You should be handing out treats and putting them into their bags or buckets
  • If possible, have individually bagged treats to give out to kids
  • If possible, hand out and give treats outdoors and not by your door
  • This will help reduce gatherings in confined spaces – doorways, porches, steps, etc.
  • If you are sick, or been in contact with someone who is sick with COVID-19 or has symptoms of COVID-19 stay home, and away from others

The city also encourages groups and organizations to hold COVID safe Halloween events like a drive by, drive through, drive in and car parade activities.

“We want everyone to have a fun but yet safe Halloween experience. We have all worked so hard throughout this COVID-19 pandemic but we must remain vigilant if we are to defeat this virus,” Sarno and Caulton-Harris said in the announcement. “Although our vaccination rates continue to steadily improve, we still have a long way to go, especially with vaccinating our younger population. We must be smart and safe in order to continue to build public, consumer, and business confidence. If everyone follows these simple but yet proven and effective precautions, we can all enjoy a fun and safe Halloween.”

Children's Hospital: Sleeping and bathing tips for parents to keep babies safe at home - KKTV 11 News

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - The Children’s Hospital has important reminders for parents when keeping their babies safe at home.

11 News spoke with the Children’s Hospital in Colorado Springs, who provided tips on car/car seat, bathing and sleeping safety.

“Every child deserves to be safe and thrive in this country. I want to help educate, whether you’re a new parent or have several children of your own of these good reminders. Spread the word. Be helpful to each other,” said Sam Hong, NICU nurse at Children’s.

Sleeping tips for babies:

- Need to sleep on their back

- Sleep on firm surface with no objects, like pillows, blankets, toys or stuffed animals

- Do not share the bed with a baby, although sharing the room with a baby is safe

- Never nap on a couch or chair while holding your baby

- Put baby in a sleep sack or onesie

According to CO4Kids, sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) include sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), accidental suffocation in a sleeping environment, and other deaths from unknown causes. SUIDs reportedly take the lives of about 50 children under the age of 1 every year in Colorado.

Bathing tips for babies:

- Make sure the water is warm, not hot. Use the back of your hand, wrist or elbow to test the water temperature

- Have supplies ready within a hand’s reach, like shampoos, soaps or towel

- Never leave your baby unattended in the bath

According to CDPHE, between 2016-2020, there were 34 total emergency department visits due to drowning/submersion, and half (17) of those incidents were kids under 18 years old. In that time frame, 50% of drowning/submersion injuries were in kids.

“They can drown even in 1 to 2 inches of water. It only takes 20 seconds,” said Hong.

7 Tips for paying off credit card debt | Chase - Chase News & Stories

While credit cards can offer a way to cover expenses that your paycheck can't handle today, interest rates on unpaid credit card debt can create new bills to threaten your budget.

When you are ready to pay off your credit card debt, there are a few different strategies that can reduce your credit card debt and bring balance to your financial well-being.

  • Know your budget
  • List out your credit card debts, minimum payments, and APR
  • Select a credit card debt reduction strategy: snowball method vs. avalanche method
  • Automate your payments
  • Investigate alternative ways to pay off credit card debt
  • Cultivate a healthy credit lifestyle
  • Freeze or lock your card if you want to avoid incurring more debt

1. Know your budget

If you haven't done so already, tracking your income against your expenses is the best first step to understanding how you can attack your credit card debt.

Find a worksheet online like Chase's monthly budget worksheet (PDF) and understand the big picture of what you earn and what you spend each month. As you enter your expenses, you'll include any of your current credit card's minimum payments — which you can use for your next step for paying off credit card debt.

2. Know your debt

Knowledge is power when attacking credit card debt: so seeing exactly how much you owe, what you need to pay each month, and the amount of interest each of your card's charge against unpaid debts will help you determine your best plan for attack.

Listing these credit card details will let you easily progress to the next step in paying off your credit card debt.

3. Select a credit card debt reduction strategy

Now that you know your budget and the details of your credit card debt, you can select a strategy to pay off your credit card debt.

Using the snowball method to pay off credit card debt

The snowball method targets the credit card that has the smallest current balance. While you assign the minimum payment to all other credit cards, you use every bit of your available budget every month to pay off the credit card that has the smallest overall debt.

Once you have completely paid off your credit card with the smallest balance, you take that same monthly budget and apply it — in addition to the monthly minimum payment — to the credit card with the next smallest balance

Using the avalanche method to pay off credit card debt

Where the snowball method attacks the credit card with the smallest balance, the avalanche method reduces your credit card debt by attacking your credit card that has the highest annual percentage rate (APR) or interest rate.

While you use minimum payments to pay against all of your other credit cards, you use as much as you can from your available budget to pay off your high-APR credit card.

Once you have fully paid off the high-APR credit card, you use that same monthly budgeted amount — in addition to the monthly minimum payment — to pay off the next-highest APR card.

The avalanche method works by striking down the biggest contributor to your increasing credit card debt: interest payments. By paying off your highest APR card, you significantly reduce the amount of interest that you must regularly pay each month.

Picking a method to pay off your credit card debt

Both the snowball method and the avalanche method have been proven to be effective ways to reduce credit card debt.

Proponents of the snowball method suggest that working on a smaller balance allows you to develop habits that promote credit card health while creating a goal that can be quickly completed.

Avalanche method supporters contend that building a budget that works against your highest APR card is more financially advantageous, as you are immediately reducing the debt that produces your largest bills.

Either method can combat your credit card debt, provided you have a full understanding of all of your credit card's balances. You can also use both debt reduction methods by switching between paying off smaller balances then shifting to cards with high APRs: as best matches your available budget and motivations.

4. Automate your payments

For any method you use, automating your payments allows you to commit to a monthly budget for reducing your credit card debt. As you do, take advantage of any ability to rearrange your credit card payment dates to better align with your paychecks.

5. Investigate alternative ways to pay off credit card debt

If you have found that your budget can't handle a self-directed credit card debt reduction plan or you have too many open accounts to manage on your own, it may be time to look into other resources.

Debt counseling services

Debt counselors will likewise assess your income and debts and aim to build a roadmap towards a zero balance. They can also leverage their standing to earn lower settlements and interest rates against your accounts.

For severe debt, debt reduction solutions from debt counselors may include debt settlements as they attempt to consolidate your bills and reduce your overall interest rates. While debt settlements can close your credit card accounts, they may also put a negative resolution on your credit history, which can drive your credit score down.

Finally, while most debt counselors will apply a service fee, there are some qualifications that can earn you a free or a reduced price on debt counseling services.

Balance transfer credit cards

Balance transfer credit cards may be useful to some people, but there are a few thing to consider when it comes to applying for one, such as credit worthiness, balance transfer fees, and more. Most credit card offers that include an ability to transfer existing credit card balances will also state their APR: so moving an existing balance from a high APR card to a new credit card with a lower APR may help reduce the amount of interest you will pay on the balance each month.

Balance transfer fees

If approved for a balance transfer, the bank or credit issuer may charge a balance transfer fee. Although these fees may vary, this fee typically amount to 3-5% of the balance you are requesting to transfer. You should take this fee into account when factoring in whether or not a balance transfer will help save you money in the long run.

Balance transfer credit cards with an introductory 0% APR

When you have a good credit score, you may be offered a 0% APR for any balance transfers to the new credit card during an introductory period. When you are proactively working to pay off your credit card bills, an introductory 0% APR credit card can be a great way to start your debt reduction.

By moving your debt from existing credit cards that have a high APR, you are removing the interest payments you will have to make on the open line of credit for a period of time — typically 12-18 months. Provided that you are paying as much money as possible to pay off your new credit card during that introductory APR window, you are saving additional payments of interest each month.

Balance transfer credit cards with lower APRs

Even if a new credit card doesn't offer 0% APR on balance transfers, moving an existing balance from a high-APR credit card to one that has a lower APR will reduce the amount of interest you pay every month.

While continually transferring balances is a risky behavior, coordinated and strategic balance transfers as you reduce your credit card bills can be a way to limit the amount of interest you pay.

Debt consolidation loans

A good debt consolidation loan will pay off your credit cards all at once, rearranging your finances to pay off the loan at a lower interest rate over a longer period of time. To qualify, you'll likely need a strong credit score to earn lower interest rates than your current credit card APRs.

However, some debt consolidation loans may have monthly payments that are higher than your current credit card bills: so be certain that you can afford the monthly payments before you commit. If you get a credit consolidation loan, you should also be aware that it could cause your credit score to go down if it negatively affects your credit utilization ratio.

Additionally, a potential trap with debt consolidation loans is to offer you relief from your credit card debts while giving you that steady monthly loan payment to meet — but your suddenly available credit pushes you towards new expenses. While closing your credit cards isn't healthy for your credit score, the temptation to use your new zero balances for new spending can drive you right back into a credit card debt crisis.

It's especially important when using a debt consolidation loan to carefully monitor and limit your credit card usage against your budget.

Home equity loans or lines of credit

Similar to loans earmarked for debt consolidation, home equity loans or home equity lines of credit can allow you to put your loan towards existing credit card debt. Given that these loans are secured by your home, you can often have higher loan limits than a personal loan. Of course, the risk involved is that if you are unable to regularly meet the payment terms of your home equity loan or line of credit, the bank can foreclose on your home.

Like a debt consolidation loan, it can be attractive to wipe out your credit card debt all at once through a home equity loan. But, as you take on your monthly loan payment, take care to monitor and limit any of your credit card expenses to be certain that you don't build another debt that you can't repay.

6. Cultivate a healthy credit lifestyle

Often, we drive ourselves to learn about credit only when we realize we have credit problems. As you look to pay off your credit card debt, you can begin to understand the best ways to sustain a healthy and affordable credit lifestyle. This can help you avoid a credit crisis, but it can also drive your credit score higher so you can obtain attractive terms for the loan or line of credit that you may need in your future.

7. Lock but don't close your credit card accounts

Debt reduction only works if you stop adding to the balance with new purchases. To avoid overspending or accumulating additional debt, you can request your account to be locked or frozen. This will keep your account open, but you won't be able to use the card to make purchases until it is unlocked. This will help three key elements of your credit score:

  • Your credit utilization ratio — the total amount of debt you owe divided by the amount of credit account limits you have open to you — will stay low as you pay off your debts and keep your existing credit lines open.
  • Your average account age — the average time you have had each of your credit lines open — grows with every month you keep an account open.
  • Your credit mix — how many different lines of credit you have open — stays high when you have a diverse set of open credit accounts.

Make sure your paid-off accounts aren't incurring fees for a zero balance, and then check your credit score: chances are it's gone up and you now qualify for much better terms on future credit.

Proessl's Hat Trick Leads Bears to 5-1 win over Coker - Lenoir-Rhyne University Athletics - Lenoir Rhyne College Athletics

Hartsville, S.C. - After giving up the tying goal with one second to go in the first half, the Lenoir-Rhyne women's soccer team exploded for four second half goals to defeat Coker 5-1 on Wednesday night in a road conference tilt. All of the goals for the Bears were scored by freshmen, with Leonie Proessl picking up her first career hat trick and Evan O'Leary scoring the other two goals. The Bears are now 3-0 in the SAC. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

  • Final: Lenoir-Rhyne 5, Coker 1
  • Records: Lenoir-Rhyne (5-1-2, 3-0-0 SAC), Coker (0-3-2, 0-3-0)
  • Location: Hartsville, S.C. | Coker Athletic Field

STATS OF THE MATCH: 
  • The Bears had 47 shots in the game, with 18 of those on goal. That is the most shots in a game for LR in the last six seasons. 
  • Coker only had two shots on goal in the game, and didn't get their first shot until the 37th minute.
  • Proessel scored goals number three, four and five on the year to take the team lead. 
  • LR had 10 corner kicks to Coker's two.
  • The Cobras doubled up the Bears in fouls 10-5. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Proessel's hat trick is the first for a Bear since Hannah Van Eerden had one against USC Aiken in 2019.
  • This was the 10th straight win for the Bears over Coker. LR has only lost to Coker once, and that was back in 1992 in the 3rd year of the program's existence.
  • The Bears are now 3-0 in the conference. They are half a game behind Queens and Lincoln Memorial in the SAC standings. Both of those teams are 4-0 in the league. 
  • Two of the top three goal scorers on the team (Proessl and O'Leary) are freshmen. Proessl has five, O'Leary has four and Ria Acton also has four. 

UP NEXT: The Bears return home to face Lincoln Memorial in a huge conference match on Saturday. Both teams are undefeated in the league. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Moretz Sports Complex on Saturday (10/2).

Tips on communicating with Eastern Shore Rural Health - Shore Daily News

Eastern Shore Rural Health System, Inc. is experiencing high demand for its services due to COVID-19 and caring for patients who had delayed routine care early in the pandemic.

“Rural Health team members are making every effort to get our patients into the centers,” said Rural Health CEO Matthew Clay. “We want to share tips that may help you interact with Rural Health during this time of high demand for our services.”

Tips for how to communicate with Rural Health

  • If you are scheduling a routine visit, and/or a visit for an ongoing condition, call Wednesday through Friday as Mondays and Tuesdays are the busiest days for the call center.
  • Patients can avoid waiting on hold by using the Rural Health patient portal. To access the portal, go to http://portal.esrh.org/ or click the portal button on esrh.org. Through the portal you can request refills; access lab test results or immunization records; get a medical summary from your last appointment; ask your provider non-urgent questions; and see statements and pay your bill. To set up a patient portal account, a staff member must first “web enable” your chart. (While the portal is available for all ages, information available for patients ages 13-17 is limited.)
  • Medical visits can be scheduled online for all ages at the Chincoteague center, for pediatric visits at the Eastville center, and for selected providers. Go to esrh.org and select the Make an Appointment tab. To find out which providers you can schedule a visit with online, go to esrh.org, select the Care Team tab and then open the Provider Directory.
  • To improve the flow of your visit, bring all medications you are currently taking to your visit. Also be prepared to update your phone number and address. Provide the phone number you are most likely to be able to answer. To avoid missing call backs patients should enter their center number into their cell phone contacts so that it is clear Rural Health is calling you back – not a telemarketer.
  • Allow a minimum of 48 hours for prescription refill requests to be processed, and five week days for forms submitted for completion by Rural Health staff to be filled out. Patients waiting for results of lab tests or X-rays can get this information through the patient portal. Patients with lab results indicating a potential problem will be called before patients with normal results.

Other important information

Additionally, Rural Health asks patients to get vaccinated for COVID to reduce the chances of needing medical attention. Local pharmacies are offering COVID and flu vaccines and are a great option for those who just need a vaccine. Patients seen at Rural Health will be offered both vaccines as part of their medical appointments.

Additional hours are available. The Onley center is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to address medically urgent issues. It is staffed with providers from all Rural Health centers on a rotating basis. Services are limited on Saturdays – no X-rays, labs or support services are available. Each medical center also offers evening hours one day per week.

Top 5 tips for using password managers - TechRepublic

Password managers are a good way to keep your passwords unique, strong and safe. Tom Merritt gives us five tips on how to use them correctly.

Someday passwords will be gone. Microsoft, Google and others are making great strides toward that halcyon future.

But today is not that day.

And until that glorious day arrives, you still need a good way to manage all those passwords while keeping them secure. And a password manager is still the best way that balances convenience and security—with a heavy tilt toward security.

Here are five tips for password managers.

  1. You can make your master password strong and memorable. The password you use to secure your password manager does need to be long and complex. But choosing a phrase, especially one only meaningful to you, can keep it safe against dictionary attacks and make it so you don't have to write it down on a post-it note. Cat-needs-2-Eat-at-6?, for instance.
  2. Multifactor authentication is still important. Some password managers even include the generation of second-factor codes in the password manager itself making the login process that much easier. And of course, secure your password manager account with MFA as well.
  3. You can securely share a password. Many password managers let you share your credentials with someone else without letting them see the password. Granted there are ways to get them, so be careful who you share with. But if you trust the person enough to share the credential, it's an extra precaution against them accidentally compromising it.
  4. Multiple devices. Unless you somehow only use one device, your password manager should be accessible across the devices you use. You don't want to have to keep pulling out one device to get the password to use on another one.
  5. It's more than just passwords. You can use the security of your password manager to store other things that would be vulnerable in an unencrypted text note, like credit card numbers for instance.

Even if you deploy Shared Account Password Management, password managers for employees are still a good idea to implement. Just make sure you get one that's easy to use, end-to-end encrypted and has the features you need.

Massachusetts town announces trick or treat times, suggests masks with costumes for Halloween - MassLive.com

A Massachusetts town has announced it will be hosting trick-or-treating this year after many towns had to cancel the Halloween event during 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spencer, Mass., said it will be hosting trick-or-treating from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 31 and urges trick or treaters to wear a mask.

“The Chief of Police strongly suggests that all those participating be safe and wear a mask in addition to your costume,” the Facebook post states. “COVID is still with us and we need to remain on guard.”

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that she thought kids could safely trick or treat this year but cautioned against events indoors.

“If you’re able to [trick or treat] outdoors, absolutely,” Walensky told CBS News’ “Face the Nation.”

The City of Pittsfield also told MassLive that trick-or-treating is allowed this year, something the city discouraged in 2020. But the parade is canceled.

Pfizer has submitted data to the Food and Drug Administration, seeking to use its COVID vaccine for children ages 5 to 11. Currently, however, vaccines are only approved for children 12 years or older.

The state has also extended its mask mandate for public school through Nov. 1.

The state’s latest report said there were 2,236 students and 318 staff members in Massachusetts public schools that tested positive for COVID-19.

The report shows a much higher number of students with COVID than any week during the last school year, when hybrid and remote learning options were still in play. The highest weekly case count among students last year was 1,095 in mid-April.

Apple’s latest right-to-repair trick is delightfully evil - Computerworld

The right-to-repair is a crucial enterprise IT issue, as it always has been. Whether that means using a large IT operation’s team or one of the third-party repair providers that have been contracted to help, the demand that enterprises exclusively use one vendor to fix anything is abhorrent. And one can’t mention abhorrent without mentioning Apple’s repair history. 

I’ve always been impressed by how clever (evil?) Apple can get when trying to protect its repair revenue. With that ind mind, a new report from MacRumors doesn’t disappoint. (The site picked up on a YouTube video from Phone Repair Guru detailing what's going on.)

What’s impressive about this particular Apple maneuver is how intricate it is. Somehow, the company has  coded the screens on its new iPhone 13 models to identify the original screen. When it’s replaced — even with another Apple authorized screen purchased from Apple — Face ID still won’t work.

I’ll let the original story tell a little more of the tale.

If a customer gets their ‌iPhone 13‌ display replaced by a third-party repair store or provider, such as those not licensed or affiliated with Apple through its Independent Repair Program, Face ID on the iPhone will no longer be usable,” MacRumors reported. “Despite this, if an ‌iPhone 13‌ display is replaced with a ‘non-genuine’ or even a genuine, original ‌iPhone 13‌ display, Face ID stops working, despite there seemingly being no hardware within the display itself needed for Face ID to function.”

In testing, the media outlet found that this apparently wasn’t a glitch. “The repair provider swapped two original ‌iPhone 13‌ screens and, in both cases, Face ID was inoperative after the new screens were installed. It seems to be the case that if the original screen is put back with the original ‌iPhone 13‌, Face ID returns, ruling out the possibility of an improper installation.”

To me, the most interesting/baffling part is that this lack of FaceID — a critical element of Apple’s authentication efforts — still kicks in, even when the replacement screen is authorized by Apple and/or directly from Apple. If it’s the exact same screen, how can the phone know? 

Presumably, the screens either have identity embedded in them, whereby they will only work with the original phone. But given that Apple itself can replace the screen without issues, that suggests that there is a secret trick (perhaps a string of characters entered into the phone by the authorized repair person?) to installing the screen.

That would mean if Right To Repair efforts are coded into law worldwide, Apple would either have to remove that process or tell everyone what it is. I’m betting Apple would simply remove it. That way, if it's careful, it would never have to admit that it concocted this whole scheme.

If Apple stopped spending time trying to find ways to screw customers and focused more on coming up with better features and functionality and true security, the company could actually reap even more money.

Then again, there are those who argue that Apple has pretty much hit the ceiling of its likely market share against Android. If that’s true, adding more features might not materially boost sales. Therefore, their efforts to retain all repair revenue makes sense.

Personally, I think Google’s “Don’t be Evil” tagline arose because it knew Apple better deserved the “Be Evil” title.

Ulfarsson Nets Hat Trick in 4-0 Win Over Howard - Duke University - GoDuke.com

DURHAM – The No. 4 Duke men's soccer team (7-1-0) earned another shutout win in its return to Koskinen Stadium on Tuesday night after it defeated Howard (1-4-2), 4-0.
 
"I think we are getting to know each other even more now," head coach John Kerr said. "The players are coming into form now, like Thor didn't play the first four games and guys are coming back from injury. I feel that we are getting to know each other and the movement off the ball has been tremendous."
 
Sophomore Thorleifur Ulfarsson netted a hat trick in the victory, scoring in the 26th, 55th and 73rd minutes to pace the Blue Devils' offense. Freshman Felix Barajas recorded the second goal of the game, while fellow freshman Shakur Mohammed notched two assists. Sophomore goalkeeper JT Harms earned his second shutout of the season and finished with two saves on the night.
 
"I think the team has grown over time and we've gotten better and better," Ulfarsson said. "We are getting better at the best time of the year, so things are good."
 
Ulfarsson's hat trick on Tuesday was the second of his career, as he also registered a three-goal performance at Virginia on March 28, 2020. The Kopavogur, Iceland, native now has five goals for 10 points in four games this season. For Mohammed, his multi-assist game is the first by a Blue Devils since Max Moser notched two assists in a 3-0 win over Harvard on September 8, 2019.
 
Right out of the gate, Duke began to attack the Howard goalkeeper. Mohammed sparked a Duke attack when he made a long run in transition up the field with the ball. The Kumasi, Ghana, native found a wide open Ulfarsson at the other end of the Howard box and the sophomore buried it for the opening goal of the game.
 
Just two minutes later, freshman Ruben Mesalles joined the offensive action from the left back position when he fed Mohammed with a cross into the middle of the field. Mohammed then found Barajas, who ripped a shot into the upper middle portion of the net for his third goal of the season.
 
The Blue Devils ended the half with 10 shots and finished the game with a season high 27. Duke also set a season high in shots on goal with 15.
 
The home side continued their offensive pressure in the second half, finding two additional goals from the foot of Ulfarsson. The first began after senior Ian Murphy sent sophomore Nick Pariano off to the races with a long ball deep into Howard's end of the field. Pariano then delivered a one touch cross to a sprinting Ulfarsson, who beat a sliding Bison goalkeeper to make it 3-0.
 
To cap off a strong night, Barajas threaded the needle when he delivered a pass to Ulfarsson on the run. Ulfarsson beat two Howard defenders and the goalkeeper before finding the back of the net to make it 4-0. With the final tally, the Blue Devils have now extended their home goal differential to 11.
 
Next up for the Blue Devils is a top-15 ACC clash with No. 14 Louisville on Friday at 7 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
